organized “Popular Biotechnology Lecture Series” Sponsored
by Department of Biotechnology, Govt. of India.
Department of
Biotechnology (DBT), Govt. of India sponsored popular
lectures on biotechnology by experts was organized by Roland
Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Berhampur, Orissa on
27th August, 2011. A total of 293 delegates
registered for the seminar, mainly faculty members, college
students and general public in and around Berhampur, Orissa
participated in the event.
The programme
was started at 1.30 PM with registration of delegates
followed by inaugural session at 2.00PM. The Chief guest,
Madam J. Jayalaksmi, Chair person of Roland Group of
Institutions inaugurated the function by lighting the lamp
along with other dignitaries present on the occasion. Prof
M.E. Bhanooji Rao, Principal-cum-convener of the programme
welcomed the dignitaries and expressed gratitude to
Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Govt. of India, resource
persons and delegates. Dr. J. Surya Rao, Director,
highlighted the audience about the importance of such event
to impart need based knowledge in the field of biotechnology
and ability to apply and utilize them in the relevant field.
Dr. K Srinivasa Rao, Chief Co-ordinator of the event,
presented a brief report on the event. Eminent speakers
from academia and research institutes including Prof.
Chandra Sekhar Panda, Visiting Professor, National Institute
of Science Education and Research, Bhubaneswar-751005;
Prof. Santosh Kumar Das, H.O.D, P.G. Dept. of Biosciences,
College of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Mohuda, Berhampur; Dr.
Satpal Singh Bisht, Professor & Head, P.G. Department of
Biotechnology, Roland Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences,
Berhampur, Orissa delivered talks.
The first
lecture started at 2.30PM on “Concepts and applications of
Pharmaceutical Biotechnology” delivered in hindi by Dr.
Satpal Singh Bisht. Dr. Bisht highlighted the fundamental
concepts like Transgenic Plants as Functional Foods or
Neutraceuticals, Transgenic Plants and Plant Cell Culture as
Bioreactors of Secondary Metabolites, Transgenic Plants as
Bioreactors of Recombinant Proteins etc.,
followed by tea break for about 15 minutes. The second
Lecture started at 3.30PM by Prof. Chandra Sekhar Panda, on
“Biopharmaceutical Development”. In his lecture, information
on some selected interesting biomolecules like strychnine,
reserpine, penicellins, prostaglandins, monensin,
periplanone, rapamycin, polytoxin, brevitoxin etc., has been
highlighted. Third lecture started at 4.30PM on
“Biopharmaceuticals : Current status and future prospects”
by Prof. Santosh Kumar Das. He discussed biopharmaceuticals
and pharmaceutical biotechnology, history of pharmaceutical
industry, age of biopharmaceuticals and current status and
future prospects. At the end the participants were given
certificate of participation. The whole programme ended at
6.00PM.
